Grateful, the professor tore open the wrapper and devoured the bar as they walked back to the entrance. Stuffing the wrapper into his pocket, he reached for the door handle.

The sheriff blocked him with his hand. “Wait. Let me go first, just in case. This door should be locked, anyway.”

He turned the handle and pushed. The large door swung back into the building. “Well, shit. At least you weren’t lying about this. I don’t understand. This place should be locked up. Looks like someone has been tampering with things. Get behind me.”

They entered the dim hallway and started exploring the rooms. It was the same as before. Completely silent. No one around. The only sounds in the building were their echoing footsteps and breathing.

They continued down the long hallway until they reached the library. The sheriff slid a flashlight from his belt and bounced the beam off the wooden bookshelves and into the dim corners of the large room. Nothing. Making their way over to the fireplace, he glanced inside.

“Did you make a fire in here last night?”

“I didn’t, but someone did. It was already burning when I came into the room.”

Sighing, the sheriff turned away and walked back toward the hall. “Fine, let’s look around upstairs and see if there are any signs of squatters. That does happen sometimes back in these woods if people leave their cabins unattended for too long.”

The professor shook his head. “They sure as hell didn’t look like squatters to me. But I agree. Let’s check upstairs. I only looked in a few of the rooms up on the second floor.”

The men made their way to the second floor and checked every room. Then, finding the stairs to the third floor, they explored those rooms as well. This floor was even dustier than the other one. The rooms looked as if they had been undisturbed for a very long time.

“Happy now?”

William clenched his jaw, but nodded. “Yeah. Thank you. I don’t get it. I really don’t. There were students here yesterday. They must have taken off.”

“I’ll come back later to chain these doors up. This place shouldn’t be open. I don’t know why they don’t just tear it all down. No one will ever come back here again.”

They walked toward the vehicle, and William moved to the passenger side to get in. He slid into the seat, buckled up, and gave the building one last hopeful look. However, only the dark, empty windows met his gaze.

Silently, the abandoned buildings watched as they drove away into the distance and disappeared behind the thick, snow-laden trees. A lone figure in a high window raised a hand to the cold glass, then slowly faded back into the darkness behind her.

“Would you hand me that bowl of dried agaric?” Callum motioned vaguely toward his small countertop.

Jessica squinted at him. “Dried what? What in the hell is agaric?”

“You are the most useless witch I’ve ever known. The mushrooms!”

She walked over and brought the bowl back. “How will this help with the Fae? Are we crafting a repelling potion?”

“What?! No, nothing of the sort.” He reached for the herbs drying in a nearby window. “Soup.”

“Soup? Are you serious?”

Suddenly, an eerie warbling whistle emanated from the black forest. Another whistle answered it on the other side of Callum’s cabin, and then another, and another.

“Get back inside. Quick!”

Callum pulled Jessica into his cabin and slammed the door shut. He dropped an iron bar across the frame to lock it tight. Hustling around the room, he closed the curtains on the windows and fed more wood into the fireplace. The flames blazed higher and lit the small cabin with a warm glow.

He grabbed Jessica’s hand. “Work with me. We need to cast a strong ward—now!”

Callum held her hand as he drew symbols in the air while speaking incantations to generate a ward around the cabin. Energy lifted her hair, and she quickly matched his rhythm to add her voice to the words while mirroring his symbols. Her fingers tingled as magical energy flowed from her body to feed the spell.

A pulsing wave of power expanded outward to seal the tiny dwelling from entry by the Fae. The whistling had stopped, but they could hear the patter of little footsteps pacing in the fog—thick as pea soup around the cabin—mixed with thudding footfalls from something quite large.

An angry hiss emanated near the front porch as something encountered the ward. Then, a low, rumbling growl echoed through one window. It almost sounded like a tiger, but this was an entirely different breed of predator that had never hunted these woods before.

Jessica gave Callum a questioning look, but he motioned for her to stay calm. Quietly, he walked across the room to stand closer to the door and listen.

A whispering, sibilant voice came from just beyond the magical barrier. “Wizard, why are you so unfriendly? We simply wish to speak with you about a matter of mutual interest.”

“Speak, then. I can hear you.”

“May we not enter?”

Callum chuckled drily. “Never.”

“Suit yourself, wizard. We’ll be waiting.” The whispering voice faded as it moved farther away.

Jessica raised her eyebrows. “Okay, now what?”

“Now, we wait for morning. Once the forest is sunny, they will retreat deeper into the shadows. You can leave tomorrow.”

“Grrrrrreat. How am I supposed to fall asleep tonight with the stress of them being out there?”

Callum wiggled his bushy eyebrows and leered at her. “Oh, I have a few ideas for how to tire you out.”

“Seriously? You’re a graybeard again. No thanks!”

He untied his robe, letting it slip to the floor. “Gray? Maybe. But my body is still quite young…”
