The Darkness Descends

Darkness is descending

But not the usual despair

The hint of autumn winds

Rustling fragile red leaves

Knowing they will soon fall

Crunching beneath our feet

As we wander dim paths

And feel delightful shivers

With unseen eyes watching

From abandoned houses

And forgotten graves

Who are you?

What are you?

What are any of us?

Mindless ants in a human colony

Scrabbling, crawling, finding our way

To eat, fuck, sleep, work, and try to survive

Is that all this sad existence is meant to be?

She stayed nearby

I journeyed away

A serendipitous moment

Brought us together

And I’ll never know why

She slid into my lap

Kissing me so deeply

Because we never

Touched or talked again
