Jessica grumbled as she shouldered a daypack and locked her vehicle. At least now she knew how to find the hidden trail that led to the wizard’s cabin deep in the forest. But it was still a long fucking hike.
Why did Callum have to live so far out in the damn wilderness? And he would never lower himself to own something like a cellphone. So, every single conversation had to be in person. He said he would never venture into the city, but it might be time for that to change. She hoped he would reconsider, given what was coming.
A couple of hours later, she was sure she was standing in the clearing where his cabin should be. But, of course, the cranky bastard had hidden it again. He hated visitors and was more paranoid than anyone she’d met.
She closed her eyes, whispered an incantation under her breath, and stretched her hands in front of her to seek the energy of the veil. As she carefully stepped forward, she could feel it tingling and yielding slightly under her fingertips. So this was the right clearing, after all. It felt like a cool, vibrating layer of energized gelatin. Squishy and strange…
Jessica couldn’t invoke his unique magical key to dispel the veil since it was tied to the spellcaster who created it. But she thought she might be able to pass through it, especially since they had bonded the last time she was here—when he had been inside her and filled her completely.
Glancing around to make sure no one would see her—as if anyone else would be stupid enough to be this deep in this dangerous forest—she gestured, quietly spoke another incantation, and pressed forward into the veil.
It yielded and allowed her to penetrate but quickly wrapped around her body, sealing her in the sticky energy from head to toe. She couldn’t breathe, and she could barely move, which made her almost panic. She had to focus and continue, or she would be trapped inside until she died from suffocation.
Real magic was unforgiving. It didn’t give a fuck if you lived or died.
If you were powerful enough to focus the energy, you could do amazing things beyond the comprehension of normals. But, if you hesitated and lost confidence, it would consume you entirely and feed your energy to others who were more deserving.
She centered herself and pressed on. The tingling intensified as she stretched the veil and pushed her body through it. With a sudden popping sensation, she was through and stumbled forward. She clutched her crotch as the aftereffects shot through her sensitive parts like a tiny electric shock.
What the fuck! That dirty damn wizard… She suspected the perverted twist was intentional.
Gasping, she blinked her eyes and looked around. She was inside the illusion now, so his small cabin was visible directly in front of her, tucked between large pine trees. Smoke rose from the chimney, so it looked like he might be home. How very kind of him to let her struggle in the veil. She was becoming more irritated by the minute.
Stepping onto the small porch, she hammered her fist on his front door. No answer. She knocked again. She swore she could hear someone moving inside, but he still didn’t open the door. Screw it; if she couldn’t come inside after what they had done, who could?
Turning the handle, she pushed the door open, stepped inside, and closed it behind her. The windows were covered, and the only light came from low flames in the fireplace. There was a strange yet pleasant scent in the air that she couldn’t quite place. It was a bit musky and enticing, making her heart beat a little faster.
As she scanned the small cabin, it was clear he wasn’t there. Why had the idiot left a fire burning? He must be growing older again and losing his edge. Sighing deeply, she started walking across the room to relax on his bed and wait for his return.
Suddenly, a weight dropped from above and slammed her to the wooden floor. A growling, hissing sound emerged from whatever was on top of her. Something coiled around her neck and began squeezing. For fuck’s sake… how many times would she be suffocated today?
Jessica clawed at the coil, which felt warm and alive. It tightened so that she couldn’t slip her fingers underneath it. Ewwww, what the hell was it?! Desperate, she reached underneath her body for the knife she kept in a sheath on her belt. It was difficult, but she pulled it free and snaked her arm back out. Reaching for her neck, she pressed the blade against the muscular tendril. It flinched, burning her neck with a whipping motion as it tore loose.
The weight rolled off her back, and something made an ear-shattering shrieking and yowling sound. That couldn’t be good…
She heard it scrambling across the floor and saw a dark form fling itself into Callum’s bed. She quickly sat up and hoarsely mumbled a quick spell, flashing her fingers in an arcane symbol as she flung energy at the bedding around the creature. The blankets spun in the air and twisted around it, wrapping and binding the wriggling form. The more it flung itself around, the tighter the bonds became. Soon, it was a hissing cocoon twitching on the bed.
Jessica stood up, brushed herself off, and looked for the lantern she’d noticed the last time Callum had chained her to his workbench. Lighting it, she moved closer to the bed to see what she had captured.
A beautiful female face looked up at her through the blanket cocoon, with dark eyes blinking in the sudden light. Her shimmering skin was a deep blueish-purple, and something was not quite right about her. She wasn’t human, and she was definitely furious.
“Intruder!!! The wizard will kill you when he returns. He is mighty. Set me free now, or you will regret it!”
Jessica arched one eyebrow in amusement. “I’m the intruder? It seems like you’re the one who broke into his cabin. I’m his friend. But who are you? And what the fuck are you?”
The creature wiggled and hissed but still couldn’t break free. “I am Vianelle, his girlfriend. If you were indeed his friend, you would know that.”
Jessica stared at her with her mouth wide open. Then, she burst into laughter, doubling over and wheezing.
“Girlfriend???” She couldn’t continue. She burst into another gale of laughter, tears flowing from her eyes. Slowly, her chuckles trailed off, and she wiped her face.
“Okay, seriously now. What are you talking about?”
Vianelle frowned. “Callum and I are lovers. I am bonded to him. Are you not familiar with my kind?”
What has that dirty bird done now? Jessica shook her head. “I don’t know what your kind is. Explain.”
“I’m a succubus. He trapped me, or maybe I should say he saved me. It’s a long story. But I belong to him now.”
A succubus… Why in the hell would he trap a demon? An even better question; why would he fuck her and live with her in his cabin?
Vianelle interrupted her thoughts. “If you are a real friend of Callum’s, can you release me from this trap you created? It’s not very comfortable.”
“Oh, sure. But I can put you right back into it if you try to attack me again. Understand?”
The succubus nodded as best as she could inside the blankets. Jessica moved back a few steps and invoked the spell to unwind the cocoon. The demon was dumped onto the bed with an undignified spinning and twisting. She twisted to sit up and face her.
She was completely nude. Of course, she was. And she appeared to have a long, dark tail and wings fanning out behind her.
Jessica shook her head and sighed. “I’m sorry I hurt your… tail. But you were kind of trying to kill me. Apparently, we have much to discuss. I want to learn more about you and where you came from. And why Callum is keeping you here. Can you help me understand all of this?”
The succubus smiled and nodded. Suddenly, she gave her a sly look and said, “Yes, yes. I can help. But first, did you bring any treats?”
