“Callum, we have a problem.”
A voice emerged from the apple tree he’d climbed to gather fruit for the week. Startled, he dropped his basket and almost fell off his perch.
“Damn it! Don’t do that!”
A pretty little dryad slid around the tree trunk and giggled at him. Her green eyes sparkled with mischief.
“Sorry! Heyyy… why do you look so young? What have you done?”
He adjusted his grip on the branch above and frowned at her. “That’s none of your business. And what problem could we possibly share, you green imp?”
“Don’t call me that! I hate when you call me that.”
He sighed and said, “Ok, you sweet, little apple-bottom girl. What’s going on? What’s this problem you’re so worried about?”
She frowned for a second longer, but then she beamed at him with delight. “I knew you loved my bottom. Anyway… a demon of some sort has been terrorizing the humans at the nearby lake. Word has been traveling through the forest about it. We’re getting worried about what might happen next.”
She was right. Scared humans were stupid, dangerous creatures. And if they thought a “monster” was lurking in the surrounding woods, bad things might result. It wouldn’t be the first time axe and torch-wielding idiots had stumbled through the forest and wreaked havoc. No wonder the dryad was nervous. If something happened to her tree, she would suffer.
“What else do you know? Give me all the details.”
“Whatever it is, it hurt several young men a few nights ago. A naiad said she heard angry shouts and screams near one of the big houses on the lake. All the nearby dryads sensed a pulse of dark energy, but no one was killed. Whatever it was, the damage was minimal and local. Then it moved on. So, we’re assuming a minor demon.”
He stared into the distance in the lake’s direction. Young men. Dark energy. Minor localized havoc. Callum already suspected what this was. Those stupid fucking boys.
His shoulders slumped, and he said, “Ok, I have some ideas. I don’t want a mob wandering through the forest any more than you do. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
“What is it? What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to set a snare to catch what I think this is. Don’t worry about it. Let me make one thing clear: I won’t let the humans harm you or the others. Ok?”
She frowned. “Tell me what you think it is. I brought you the news, so I deserve to know what’s going on.”
“Fine, dammit. If I’m not mistaken, I bet those stupid young men summoned a succubus. But they fucked up the ritual. That’s probably how it broke free and fought back. If I can lure it in, I’ll know for certain.”
“Lure it in with what?” she asked.
Callum didn’t think it was still possible at his age, but her question made him blush. “An entrapment spell. Magical ingredients. You wouldn’t understand. You don’t need to know.”
She pressed him, “Tell me! I wait here in my tree for months — even years— bored and mostly alone unless you decide to visit me and steal my apples.”
His face clouded. “I don’t steal your apples! You offered them! I always visit with you when I come by.”
She laughed at him. “I’m teasing you, you cranky wizard. But, tell me. Tell me, tell me, tell me!”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine… If it’s a succubus, then it feeds on one thing. Sexual energy. You know… the essence of men. So, I’m going to use it in a spell to bait the trap.”
She narrowed her deep green eyes. “Essence? You mean human seed?”
He blushed again. “Yes, yes. That. Are you happy? Now you know. I need to go. The spell will take some time.”
“But where will you get the seed?” she asked him with a furrowed brow.
“Enough with all the questions!” he grumbled. “You do know I’m human, right? I’ll take care of it.”
A sly smile crept over her mint-green face. “I can help you with that, you know. It’s been so long since a man visited me. I can’t even remember the last time it happened. I get so lonely here.”
